Tips for first-time 5K runners

You are likely going to be just as excited as you will be nervous before running your first 5K race. There are few things you can do before and during the race to help keep as much apprehension as possible at bay.

  • The night before the race, put on everything you plan to wear when your run. Not only is this a good way to make sure you have everything, but it’s a chance to check over your equipment and give you a chance to replace anything that might need it.
  • Arrive early. Get yourself acclimated with what’s going on. As a first-timer there is bound to be some confusion about something, give yourself plenty of time to figure out where you need to be and take care any last minute needs.
  • Running coaches say not to run the whole race at once. Break it up into smaller pieces, one mile at a time, a half-mile at a time – whatever works best for you. It’s easier to climb a few smaller hills that one big mountain, especially when the destination is the same.
